Upcoming Reboots
(repost of email sent to openstack-users Thursday May 25 2026)
Week of June 1 2026
As part of our periodic maintenance cycle and to address recent Linux kernel vulnerabilities, we will be rebooting all OpenStack hypervisors (the physical machines the VMs run on) starting June 1st 2026.
Normal VMs
For most systems (anything not using a ups.* instance type), reboots
will happen Monday June 1st and Tuesday June 2nd.
Only one hypervisor at a time will be rebooted, so if you are using anti-affinity groups to provide redundancy across hypervisors this redundancy won’t be broken.
Down time for individual VMs is anticipated to be 15-30 minutes.
ups.* Instance types
For ups.* instance types we will make our best effort to live migrate
VMs off of affected hypervisors prior to reboot.
These reboots will take place Wednesday June 3rd and Thursday June 4th.
There have been a number of Linux kernel vulnerabilities recently, if you run a UPS backed VM you should ensure it is updated to the latest kernel and rebooted for security purposes.
TIG provides these systems on a best-effort basis rather than as a
guaranteed-uptime service. There is a possibility of individual ups.*
VMs experiencing downtime similar to non-ups instances.
Control Plane Updates
We’ll also be scheduling control plane reboots “soon” but we have some additional work to plan and test before scheduling. Expect further announcements about that some time in the next few weeks.
Thanks, -TIG
