Private wireless access points in Stata

Here are some requirements if your research requires installing a non-CSAIL wireless access point in your Stata lab space:

  1. Coordinate with TIG by sending email to help@csail. We will find a channel and power level that allows your research environment to coexist with other lab members.

  2. If you do not require use of the 2.4 GHz ("ISM" or "b/g") wireless band, disable it to allow the limited 2.4 GHz spectrum to be used by those researchers who actually need it.

  3. Do not, under any circumstances, enable wide (40 MHz, "bonding" or "ac") mode on the 2.4 GHz band. Caution: some brands of consumer wireless access points enable this by default. This mode is only suitable for single-family homes well isolated from other buildings.

  4. Do not install access points that cannot configure the channel bandwidth, unless you are absolutely certain that they only use 20 MHz ("single" or "narrow") channels. In particular, __the Apple AirPort Extreme is prohibited__; it does not allow sufficient user control to configure it to not conflict with the CSAIL wireless network.

  5. If you are not sure whether your device can meet these requirements, include a link to the on-line manual in your email to help@csail and TIG will evaluate it for compliance.
