Private wireless access points in Stata
Here are some requirements if your research requires installing a non-CSAIL wireless access point in your Stata lab space:
-
Coordinate with TIG by sending email to help@csail. We will find a channel and power level that allows your research environment to coexist with other lab members.
-
If you do not require use of the 2.4 GHz ("ISM" or "b/g") wireless band, disable it to allow the limited 2.4 GHz spectrum to be used by those researchers who actually need it.
-
Do not, under any circumstances, enable wide (40 MHz, "bonding" or "ac") mode on the 2.4 GHz band. Caution: some brands of consumer wireless access points enable this by default. This mode is only suitable for single-family homes well isolated from other buildings.
-
Do not install access points that cannot configure the channel bandwidth, unless you are absolutely certain that they only use 20 MHz ("single" or "narrow") channels. In particular, __the Apple AirPort Extreme is prohibited__; it does not allow sufficient user control to configure it to not conflict with the CSAIL wireless network.
-
If you are not sure whether your device can meet these requirements, include a link to the on-line manual in your email to help@csail and TIG will evaluate it for compliance.
