Dot Software

$HOME/.software is a mechanism allowing users to make certain software packages available to their environment that may not be included in the default CSAIL environment. Such packages may include large, complex packages that require specific environment variables to be set and are of interest only to a relatively small subset of the community.

See the software(5) man page on a CSAIL Ubuntu system or on login.csail.mit.edu for more information and for the list of software packages handled by the .software system.

If you are using a custom shell configuration, then source the corresponding csail shell config file in /afs/csail.mit.edu/system/common/etc

eg: if your default shell is zsh, add the following line to your ~/.zshrc

source /afs/csail.mit.edu/system/common/etc/zsh/zprofile.csail
