Error Logs and immediate access to Web Access Logs

Web server logs for most CSAIL Web servers are available to Lab members by logging in to the appropriate Web server (courses, groups, legacy, mit-only, people, or projects), updated in real time. Access logs are in /var/log/apache2/access.log and error logs are in /var/log/apache2/error.log, on local disk of each web server.

Isolating scripting or access errors is best done by searching for a time, IP address, and/or URL in those files corresponding to the requests that fail. Specifically, any time your browser shows "500 Internal Server Error", this means that a more informative error message has been written to the server's error log.

Web access statistics

Access logs (only) are split up into separate files for each virtual host on a daily basis, with the results stored in /afs/ at about 6:45 AM each day. In addition, all virtual hosts have Webalizer analysis available at (CSAIL Certificates required).

We intend that all CSAIL virtual hosts should have the same Webalizer configuration, but within that constraint, we would be interested in any comments, suggestions, or requests that you might have. We are particularly interested in knowing whether you would prefer to see the data with or without requests search engines, and whether we should include the breakdown by requesting user.
