Useful KDE Hints

CSAIL Debian 6.0 "Squeeze", the current version as of January 2012, uses KDE4, a significant change from Lenny's KDE3. See a previous version of this page for hints specific to KDE3.

You can find most of the settings and applications you need by clicking on the K button on the lower left of your screen. If you are looking for an application, try sorting through the menus and see if you can find it. Some useful applications:
  • Internet > Icedove? (email, rebranded Thunderbird) and Iceweasel (browser, rebranded Firefox)
  • Settings (the second one) > System Settings (control panel)
  • System > Konsole (terminal emulator = shell prompt) and VMware Workstation (if installed, link requires CSAIL certificates)

Alt+F2 will allow to you start any program by entering its name rather than browsing menus.

Upgrades from KDE3

KDE4 uses ~/.kde4/ for its configuration, a change from KDE3's ~/.kde/. Some settings may not transfer, such as:
  • Start-at-login items need to be manually moved from ~/kde3-backup/Autostart to ~/.kde4/share/autostart
  • Background images may need to be re-specified

Setting your default printer

  • Go to Settings (the first one) -> Peripherals -> Printers
  • Find the printer you want to use as a default and right-click on it. Select Set as User Default. That printer will now show up in italics.

Panning Between Virtual Desktops

  • Open KDE control panel
  • Select Desktop->Window behaviour
  • Click the tab "Advanced"
  • Tick "Always Enabled" under "Active desktop borders"
  • Click "Apply".

Mouse pointers

Is your mouse pointer black, grey, and stubby? That's a bug that causes the "Oxygen Black" pointer theme to be used instead of KDE default. Customize or change your default in K > Settings (second one) > System Settings > Keyboard & Mouse > Mouse > Cursor Theme.
