Running Matlab

  • Linux
Additional software paths are available through your DotSoftware file, for Matlab add a single line containing the string "matlab" to ~/.software. The next time you login the appropriate environment variables will be set to access Matlab.

See 'man 5 software' for more info and the names of other packages available via this mechanism.

  • Windows XP/Vista
Occasionally when trying to run MATLAB on Windows XP or Vista an error at the splash screen can cause the application to crash. If you encounter this, one fix is to set a system environment variable:
  1. From your Start/Windows button, click Control Panel.
  2. Click System and Maintenance, then System, then under Tasks, select Advanced System Settings. (The exact location/path to the Advanced System Settings window may vary depending on your theme preferences.)
  3. If necessary, click the "Advanced" tab.
  4. Click the Environment Variables button.
  5. Click New button under the System Variables list to create a new system variable.
  6. Name the variable: MATLAB_RESERVE_LO and set its value equal to 0.
  7. Click OK to exit the window and apply the changes.
  8. Restart your system after making these changes.
