Running Matlab on Linux

Additional software paths are available through your DotSoftware file, for Matlab add a single line containing the string "matlab" to ~/.software. The next time you login the appropriate environment variables will be set to access Matlab.

See 'man 5 software' for more info and the names of other packages available via this mechanism.

Running Matlab from outside CSAIL

When getting an e-mail from the license manager, you are told to write a license.dat file of the form:
   SERVER %LicenseServer% %HexadecimalNumber% %PortNumber%
   USE_SERVER

You should forward two ports to inside CSAIL: %PortNumber%, and 34443. With SSH, Linux, and Matlab R2010a, this method can be used:

  1. write a file ~/.matlab/R2010a_licenses that contains:
       SERVER localhost %HexadecimalNumber% %PortNumber%
       USE_SERVER

this will tell matlab to access the ports locally.
  2. While running matlab, make sure this command is running:
         ssh -L %PortNumber%:%LicenseServer%:%PortNumber% -L 34443:%LicenseServer%:34443 login.csail.mit.edu

this will forward the local ports to the CSAIL license server in a secure manner.

Of course, replace all the variables with their values.
