Generic Mail Configuration Info

Make sure your client supports at least one of CRAM-MD5, DIGEST-MD5, STARTTLS, or SSL (pretty much every modern IMAP client does). You will need the following information:

  • your username (which will be configured into your mail app) and your IMAP password (which you will enter when retrieving mail).
  • imap.csail.mit.edu as the incoming server (the server you will retrieve mail from).
    • enable TLS or SSL if the client supports them (most common is SSL, which will change the port from 143 to 993)
    • enable CRAM-MD5 or DIGEST-MD5 authentication if supported
  • outgoing.csail.mit.edu as the outgoing (smtp) server
    • if you will be sending mail from outside CSAIL, enable SMTP authentication using CRAM-MD5. If not using SSL, we recommend changing the port from 25 (blocked by some ISPs) to 587 (SMTP message submission).
    • enable TLS or SSL if you want the transfer of your messages encrypted or if you use a client that only supports plaintext passwords. Using SSL will change the port to 465.
