If it's not a research group and it's not an individual user, it must be a project! That's the basic distinction. Project directories live in /afs/ and are otherwise similar to group directories except for the following differences:

  • Project directories have smaller default quotas (20 GB or smaller).
  • Projects' corresponding protection groups are self-administered and do not have parallel -admin groups.
  • Project directories use the Web server.

Many project directories are used primarily for Web hosting for lab-wide activities that are run by different people from year to year (such as the Dangerous Ideas seminar series and Intramural sports). Some of them are used for infrastructure functions like the virtual Web server (and indeed the Web server configuration itself).

The AFS volume for a project is named proj.PROJECTNAME. As with other CSAIL AFS volumes, a nightly snapshot is taken and is mounted at .snapshot in the top level of the project volume.
