Public Computing

General purpose shell access

login.csail.mit.edu is available for general purpose access. It should be used for computationally non-intensive tasks, such as reading email, editing text files, compilation of small source packages, etc. It should not be used for long running or computationally demanding processes.

Compute Cluster

TIG supports a ClusterComputing infrastructure to support both a public batch queued system using Condor and supporting various levels of customized group clustering. If your group is considering purchasing computing resources please contact help@csail.mit.edu to how this infrastructure can benefit you.

See the ClusterComputing page for information on how to use the cluster.

Borg login cluster

borg-login-1 through borg-login-4 are available for interactive computationally intensive work. These are also submit and execute machines for the ClusterComputing system

Third floor Linux machines

There are several CSAIL Debian machines in the public space between the Gates and Dreyfoos towers on the third floor. While privately owned, these machines are maintained by TIG and are available for use by the CSAIL community.

Public PC and MAC

TIG maintains 4 machines (two MacIntosh, two Windows XP) on the 2nd floor in the Gates Tower entrance area (32-244, map) for scanning and video editing. These machines are for CSAIL members only. You can log into the Windows PCs with your CSAIL Kerberos username and password. We will need to add you to an allow-list for the Mac, so please send email to help@csail to request being added. If you have any problems, don't hesitate to email TIG. There is limited software on the machines, and users cannot put software on the machines themselves. If you need additional software installed on these machines and believe there to be a benefit to the lab with such an installation, please drop us a note.

Loaner Laptop

TIG also maintains a collection of laptops available for semi-extended loan.

Scanning with Vuescan

TIG also maintains a flatbed photo scanner connected to the public iMac on the second floor. You can access the scanners by using Vuescan software. If you have any problems, don't hesitate to email TIG.

Epson Scanner

This scanner scans multiple slides simultaneously, as well as negatives and photos. And, with its built-in transparency unit, it accommodates film up to 8" x 10" (see TIG for the adapter.) The outer case has an illuminated scan progress indicator, this scanner delivers 4800 x 9600 dpi resolution, 48-bit color depth, and 4.0 Dmax.
