Changes to Stata Center wireless service
Since the Stata Center opened, CSAIL has maintained two wireless networks,
StataCenter and
StataGuest. Effective
May 26, 2009,
StataGuest will no longer be advertised or recommended, although clients which are configured to use it will still be able to connect.
Beginning June 1, 2009:
- For standard (unencrypted) access, connect to the
StataCenter network.
- Unregistered users will no longer be able to print on CSAIL printers or send email directly to off-campus mail servers.
- CSAIL members may register a device (specifically, its MAC address) to gain unrestricted access
- CSAIL members may alternatively connect to the
CSAILPrivate wireless network, which has WPA2 security, and uses certificate authentication instead of MAC registration.
How does this change affect me?
- Users who currently connect to
StataCenter and need access to CSAIL printers must either register or switch to the CSAILPrivate network to maintain their current access.
- Users who currently connect to
StataGuest should use StataCenter and need not register unless they have unusual requirements.
Technical notes
- 128.30.4.0/22 previously mapped to
StataCenter. Those addresses will now be given out only to registered clients of StataCenter.
- Addresses in 128.30.8.0/22 will be given out to clients of
CSAILPrivate.
- If you require a static IP address (rare for wireless devices), do the following steps in order: (1) register your device on
StataCenter, or connect to CSAILPrivate . (2) Reserve an IP address using WebDNS, specifying the appropriate subnet. (3) Use DHCP Registration.
- 128.31.32.0/22 previously mapped to
StataGuest. Those addresses will now be distributed to non-registered clients of StataCenter. Clients which explicitly request the old name will continue to connect to this network as well.
- The registration audit trail is kept indefinitely. Logs of network connections are kept for a maximum of eight days in accordance with our log-retention policy.
