Automated Windows Installation And ADJoin using RIS

This page describes the process of an automatic Remote Installation Services install (RIS) of Microsoft Windows XP sp2 and joining Active Directory.

Note: If your machine already has Windows XP and you want to join the machine to the domain, you should follow the ManualADJoinInstructions.

  • First register the machine in DNS using WebDNS. Note the IP address assigned by WEBDNS.

  • Register the machine using DHREG. Enter the IP address assigned by WEBDNS. For Operating System select the option as windows only.

  • If you get error message something like "Duplicate key violation this means machine is already registered in DHCP , please delete the old entry and reregister.

  • Enable PXE boot in your computer BIOS. Depending on each machine type this option may vary in each BIOS.

  • You must wait for about 30-60 minutes for DNS and DHCP updates before proceeding to the next step.

  • Now reboot the machine using network boot. Press F12 when ask to do so. This should start Remote Installation.

  • When asked for Username type "adcreate" and password as "!23abcdef". Then choose Custom Setup when prompted. Under Computer name enter the name you registered for DNS (just the host, not the fully qualified domain name.) You can leave Directory service path blank. "Enter" through the rest of the prompts.

Your installation will complete with the necessary Leash and OpenAFS software as well as MS Office, Acrobat Reader, and Firefox. You will also be joined to the AD domain.
